Monument to Upward Mobility, 2013
As I was walking back to my car one day after photographing the Hall of Justice in downtown Los Angeles, I had to ascend this staircase. I decided to take one photograph of each step, aiming the camera 5 steps ahead of me. I wondered what it would look like if I isolated each step and stacked them on top of another. On my way up, I encountered this sleeping person. I tried to talk to him to request permission to photograph. He did not wake up, so I kept photographing and left $5 under his body (all I had on me) as a fee for photographing. He became the inspiration for the title of this piece: "Monument to Upward Mobility" and I imagine one day creating a three dimensional concrete sculpture in this form.
