Violence and the Sacred #1: Ghost Door Graveyard
Violence and the Sacred #1: Ghost Door Graveyard
c-print collage, walnut artist frame
38" x 82"
2013

In 2013, I took three standard, wooden exterior door blanks (80" x 36" each) and poured a thin (1/4" thick) slab of concrete on each one. Then I painted the concrete, replicating an image of a water stain underneath the 110 Freeway in Los Angeles. These three paintings can be viewed in the "Painting" section of this site, under "Ghost Doors". Those paintings were shown in a solo exhibition at Roberts & Tilton, Los Angeles, in September 2013.

When the exhibit was over and the paintings didn't sell, I brought them to my two-car garage studio. I decided I couldn't keep them. They weighed 200+ pounds each. I decided to destroy them, but to make something new in the process of their destruction. The first painting I took to the desert and set up in multiple locations over the course of a few hours. I photographed the process and created this photo collage of the event. I removed the frame from the painting before I buried it and framed the photo collage in the same 36" x 80" frame as the original painting.
